Client: The Community Builders, MHACY

This multi-phase project by The Community Builders in partnership with the Municipal Housing Authority of the City of Yonkers (MHACY), has seen the redevelopment of a deteriorated 1940’s era public housing complex in Yonkers, NY.

MAP designed the first three phases comprising 7 separate buildings, each providing new affordable housing.

Phase I – Schoolhouse Terrace, two buildings a 51-unit senior building and 70-unit multifamily building.
Phase II – 188 Warburton Avenue, a 51-unit multifamily building
Phase III – Villas at The Ridgeway, a 4-building townhome style development with 70 duplex units.

The design for each building centered on the need to open them to the community. By contrast, the public housing that these developments replaced were inward facing, isolated and cutoff from the rest of the city. MAP put these new buildings in dialogue with the surrounding architecture. Their orientation allows them to reestablish a physical relationship with the streets around them. Their designs serve to reinvigorate pedestrian activity along their main street frontages by providing new sidewalks, street trees, and site lighting.
