Crotona Pride House

Size: 76,318 SF

This 7-story senior housing project provides affordable senior housing with an LGBTQ senior center in the Crotona neighborhood of the Bronx. It is one of New York City’s first subsidized housing developments that specifically create a community for LGBTQ Seniors; with services and support focused on LGBTQ resources. A key design driver of the development overall, is the creation of space which provides a comprehensive strategy for aging in place.
The development consists of 55 studios and 28 one-bedrooms. The studios are designed with sleeping alcoves for greater flexibility. Separating the living from sleeping areas allows for two residents to share the space.
Each floor features a senior lounge overlooking the neighboring park. These spaces are critical for promoting socialization, drawing tenants out of their private apartments, and supporting the goal of creating community. Specific lighting, signage, and anti-glare finishes allow the residents easy wayfinding, and handrails along the corridors help those with mobility challenges.
The ground floor includes an area for providing basic medical services to the residents and a 9,000 square foot community space. A landscaped roof terrace enables the residents to engage not only with each other, but with the outdoors, both important for mental and physical well-being.
